Yoga, a technique of intervention in which the mind-body coordination is reached and it has been increasingly used in cancer care to the patients.

According to the sage Vasistha, yoga is a branch of science that gives calmness to our mind. Pathanjali defines the systematic approach of eight-fold steps called ashtanga Yoga, utilising various postures, disciplines, ethics, breath control for attaining concentration through controlling the mind by a process of meditation.

Ashtanga yoga comprises yama, niyama, asana, pranayam, dhyan, dharana, pratyahara, and samadhi. Yoga helps cancer patients cope with confusion of illness and more obviously reduces fear of disease. Through the process of yoga, we have to do slow breathing, progressive exercise, meditation and will get relaxation.

Yoga is an integrated system which maintains the balances of body, energy, mind, and emotions. Every individual reaches its potential, independent of age, sex, and phenotype. Intervening yoga for prevention or treatment of disease is an attractive strategy in health-care systems.

In ayurveda, yoga and meditation are used to maintain the balance of three life energies or dosha. These can revitalise the body and provide better healing and wellness.

Gentle yoga postures can be used for the first time as a habituation ate Tadasana (mountain pose), Savasana (corpse pose).
With these asanas strength and stamina are improved.

For example, patients receiving radiation therapy for lung cancer should practise some asanas such as kapalabhati and bhastrika for fear of causing pneumothorax.

Yoga has to be taught to the caregivers to reduce their burden as well as to rejoice among the patients. Yoga is used by home care teams to manage the pain of morphine-induced constipation, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, and headache and other vasomotor symptoms.

Some of the important Yogasanas for the cancer are;

Bhujangasana- Rising-snake pose.
Mandukasana- Frog pose
Sasakasana – Rabbit pose or Seat pose
Matsyasana – Fish pose
Markatasana – Monkey pose

These yoga asanas were helpful to prevent or manage cancer care. It helps in making the union of mind and body. Apart from yoga asanas, rasayana ayurveda is proven to treat and prevent the recurrence of cancer in addition to the quality of life activities.
