In Ayurveda, maintaining energy in the body is a function of agni, or digestive fire. If our agni is strong, we can ingest ahara and create energy and if it is weak, we can turn the ahara into ama or toxicity.

Ama has specific qualities of heaviness and sluggishness and makes us feel tired.
Imbalances in the doshas also create fatigue. Each dosha imbalance leads to fatigue.

Vata
Vatas has movement and activity, but it needs natural energy with rest. Vatas can have a lot of energy for a short time but at one point where they are too tired to sleep.

Pitta
Pittas will overdo things such as too vigorous of an exercise, too much work, or too much planning and thinking. Pittas may get energy initially, can do their work but after sometime they burn out and their fatigue can also come with irritability.

Kapha
Kaphas are good at conserving their energy by not overdoing it. At times, it is the root cause of fatigue. They can also experience the ‘blues’ with fatigue. Even food gives us energy, with a slow digestion, Kaphas need to be very careful and overeating can cause fatigue.

Tips for creating energy levels and controlling the energy for our everyday deeds:

Early waking up with meditation every morning can store our energy for the day.
Perform some movements to get the fires burning for all the day. If it is cold as in the winter, do more vigorous exercise. If you live in a hot climate, more gentle movement may be best for the body.
Eat up to the hunger level in the morning. Incase of a Vata or Pitta, they need a hearty breakfast, for Kaphas may need some warm tea or coffee.
Eat The largest meal in the middle of the day by eating up to the hunger level. This may differ throughout the year, so don’t rely on eating the same amount of foods all the year.
Eating fresh seasonal foods as much as possible.
Perform some light movement and relaxing breathing at the end of the day for restoring the energy which is used during the day.
Sleep by 10:30 for maximum recovery at night so you feel more energised for next day activities.

We are all unique individuals and can continue our journey for better health and wellbeing. We pay more attention to the things that not only drain us but also fill us up with energy. When we take our time to ask ourselves these personal aesthetic questions and we honour ourselves for the answers to access the abundant energy available to us at all the times of the year.
