Lymphoma cancer Signs & Symptoms

Lymphoma cancer occurs to the lymphatic system of the body which provides the core immune system to the body 

Lymphatic system comprises lymph nodes or lymph glands, thymus gland, spleen and bone marrow. Lymphoma may affect all parts of lymphatic system and to other organs present in all over the body 

Main types of lymphoma are;

  • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
  • Hodgkin’s lymphoma or hodgkin’s disease 

Based on the severity of lymphoma, treatment may involve immunotherapy medications, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and bone marrow transplant or some above combinations.

 

Types

  • Cutaneous B-cell lymphoma
  • Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma
  • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia
  • Hodgkin’s lymphoma (Hodgkin’s disease)
  • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
  • Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia

 

Symptoms

Sign and symptoms may comprises:

  • Swelling Of lymph nodes near groin or armpits
  • Continuous fatigue
  • Fever
  • Sweating in night time
  • Breathlessness
  • Itching on skin 
  • Weight loss

 

Causes 

Exact cause of lymphoma is unknown whereas lymphoma arises when a lymphocyte has genetic mutation. Lymphocyte is a white blood cell which gives immunity by fighting microorganisms. This mutation makes cells divide swiftly and multiplying continues to form diseased lymphocytes.  Normal cells will die with the mutation in the cell. Diseased or Ineffective lymphocytes result in swelling of lymph nodes , liver and the spleen.

 

Risk factors

Risk factors of lymphoma comprises;

  • Age. Lymphoma is more common in young adults while most diagnosed at age of 55.
  • Gender male. Males are more likely to get affected with lymphoma than females.
  • Impaired immune system. People with lymphoma are more likely to have an impaired immune system as people who take drugs which suppress the immune system.

Other infections. Infections which develops increased risk of lymphoma are helicobacter pylori and epstein-Barr virus
